In keeping with the conference theme, this panel will focus on perceptions of stewardship, dependence, and meaning in songs about ties to the land. Proposals may follow themes (such as loss of the family farm as the subject of country songs) or how the works of one or two writers consistently present the issue of sustainability. Proposals should focus on the works of lyricists and not on performance of the songs. As is customary, “country” will carry a broad definition to include Americana, folk, and rock.
