On Thursday, March 20 at 6 p.m., the Comparative Religion Department is hosting a talk by Dawud Walid, Director of the Council for American Islamic Relations, Michigan chapter. The talk is entitled:
Challenges of Racism and the Acculturation of American Muslims.
The 9/11 tragedy has presented heightened challenges for Muslims in America from various ethnic groups and national origins. The rise in racism and Islamophobia has compelled American Muslims, particularly first-generation immigrants, to become more civically and politically engaged. Their increased levels of engagement have also brought about intra-community tensions based upon ethnic, class and sectarian differences. While these tensions have produced explicit and implicit narratives of the "Good Muslim vs. Bad Muslim," they have also inspired younger Muslims to critically analyze the politics of their parents’ generation within the scope of "People of Color" progressivism.
The talk will take place at the Multicultural Center, Adrian Trimpe Hall, 1081 Knollwood Ave. This event is free and open to the public. Parking is free to all in lots #39, #62, #93 and #100--- normal parking restrictions will be suspended in these lots from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on event evenings. Light refreshments will be provided. This event is part of the “Islam in Global Perspective Speaker Series.” For more information please visit: http://www.wmich.edu/religion/islam-speaker-series-overview.
