Call for Applications for:
Ph.D. Research Assistantship in Virginia Tech’s Center for Public Administration and Policy (CPAP) and Social and Decision Analytics Laboratory (SDAL)
Location: VT campuses at Alexandria (King St Metro) and Arlington (Ballston Metro) in the Washington, DC area
Degree Program: Ph.D. in Virginia Tech’s Center for Public Administration and Policy
Duration: Four-year Ph.D. assistantship beginning in fall 2014
Compensation: Tuition plus nationally competitive stipend
The assistantship includes coursework and a dissertation in Virginia Tech’s Ph.D. program in the Center for Public Administration and Policy. Coursework covers public administration, public policy, and research tools. The assistantship includes 20 hours per week of research work at the Social and Decision Analytics Laboratory (SDAL). The Lab addresses social science issues in new ways that will transform the way we understand the world, such as understanding the creation of smart and resilient cities, what influences the spread of disease and constitutes an effective public health response, homelessness, the demand for science, technology, engineering, and math educated graduates, and drivers for innovation. In answering applied social science questions, SDAL’s goal is to advance research methods and tools to access, use, and analyze new sources of structured and unstructured data.
Suitable applicants will have interests in some or all of the following:
Ÿ data analysis, statistics, programming social computing and decision analysis
Ÿ analysis of algorithms, simulations,
large databases, complex networks and probabilistic methods of analyzing combinatorial
Ÿ ensuring data quality and the validity of causal connections between social indicators
Ÿ many sources of data, both traditional ones such as surveys, and unstructured ones, such as images, sensors, and social media.
Most of all, suitable applicants will have curiosity about the social structure of the world and an interest in providing
evidenced-based analyses to inform policymakers.
