The Middle Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies will hold its annual meeting at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, College Avenue Campus, on March 7-8, 2014. The Program Committee invites faculty, students, and practitioners to submit individual papers and panel proposals that address the theme “Rethinking Social Justice in Latin America: From the Vatican to the Street.” The first pope from Latin America has proposed that social justice be a central concern of the Catholic church. At the same time protest movements throughout the hemisphere are contesting neoliberal global structures. Latin American art, cinema, and literature continue to provide spaces for imagining and expressing alternative configurations of power. Through these types of conversations, Latin Americanists are rethinking the role of social justice in the hemisphere, integrating analyses at the global, national, and community levels. In addition to work that addresses this year’s theme, papers dealing with all other aspects of Latin American Studies are also welcome. Additionally, the organizers will consider workshop proposals that aim at informing faculty and students on practical issues such as study abroad programs in Latin America, academic publishing, the road to tenure, and effective pedagogical techniques for the Latin American Studies classroom, to name a few among many possibilities.
Please submit a 250-word abstract for individual papers, workshops, or complete panel proposals (one 250 word abstract for the panel, plus titles of individual papers) in English or Spanish by January 1, 2014 by filling out the form, http://www.maclas.org/conferences/maclas-2014-cfp .
