The European meeting of the Society for the Study of Science, Literature and the Arts (Turin June 3-6 2014) aims to continue the conversation between science and the humanities on the topics of life and theories of life, representations of life, and the scientific, cultural, and political management of life.
The title of the 2014 SLSA Conference, “Life, in Theory” refers to the ways in which the principle of life is (or has been) assumed and articulated in different disciplines, whether in very limited and specific ways in biological, or genetically based, life, the life of species, or as qualified life in social, cultural, political and institutional practices.
In biopolitical times the concept of life is never a simple matter. Biopolitics as a category of biopower by means of which modern states manage the life and the life-related processes of living populations intensified in the Twentieth century and today, biopower is a crucial node of social transformation precisely because it directly affects societies by interpreting and responding to their reproductive, medical, food-related needs by redefining the notion of sustainability, by intercepting public and private fundings, and by reorienting political aims and policies in ways that will heavily impact the future of individual and community lives.
The convergence of three factors: the power to intervene in life’s constitutive processes, the administration and governance of life forms, the economic and political exploitation of the knowledge gap accounting for unequal capacity of intervention in the living and in its producibility, inaugurates a new escalation in the nexus of power and knowledge and opens up unknown risk scenarios and new forms of political, biological, and epidemiological vulnerability on the global scale. Because the concept of life today does no longer provide sufficient ontological ground to distinguish among different forms of life and to guide ethical, political, legal, medical just actions, a discussion across disciplinary knowledge on the different theories of life and the practices they authorize is all the more urgent.
The SLSA-Europe international, interdisciplinary conference, “Life, in Theory” aims at hosting such a discussion.
