CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Music of the South Conference: “Songwriting and the South”
A Conference Presented by
The Center for the Study of Southern Culture
University of Mississippi
April 2-3, 2014
“Songwriting and the South”: Music of the South Conference seeks to gather scholars, including graduate students, to share current research on the culture, meaning, and practices surrounding songwriting in and from the American South. The theme of this year’s conference is “Songwriting and the South.” The conference will consider a number of interrelated issues, including: How do songwriters incorporate southern culture, literature or regional studies into their art? What role does traditional folksong and storytelling play in the songwriting process? How do regional identity, race, and religion influence songwriting? Have recording studios in the South uniquely impacted songwriting? Does songwriting differ across musical genres? What role does oral performance play, especially in the rap tradition, in the creation and transmission of songs? How do songwriters make their livings?
Call for Proposals: We invite proposals for papers, panels, and presentations from disciplines that engage with music and the American South. Papers will be scheduled for 20 minutes, with 10 minutes allotted for Q&A or audience discussion. Papers should draw from academic research, but be presented for a general audience interested in the American South and its culture. Submissions must be mailed to: email@example.com by January 15, 2014.
There is no registration fee for this conference. The conference is cosponsored by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and Living Blues Magazine.
