The University of Texas- Pan American will host a 1-day symposium on Friday February 28th (with an evening reception on Thursday February 27th) on dual-career policies, practices, and outcomes in academia, particularly as they relate to the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women faculty, especially Hispanic women, in STEM academic fields. The program will feature keynote speakers, scholarly presentations, and interactive sessions/panels that address dual-career policies and practices and the role such policies/practices play in recruiting diverse and highly talented faculty members, especially in STEM. The symposium will help UTPA, and other participating institutions, in developing sustainable dual-career policies for faculty while raising awareness of the issues confronting women in dual-career couples. The event will foster institutional collaborations at the regional/national levels and provide opportunities for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and best practices in dual- career hiring and support services. Speakers and sessions will be geared toward faculty (particularly those in STEM), academic administrators, dual-career consultants, faculty recruitment professionals, and higher education professionals. Participation from ADVANCE Institutions and Hispanic Serving Institutions is highly encouraged.
Call for Presentations & Participation
We are currently seeking proposals for panel presentations of 20-3o minutes in length. Topics include (but are not limited to) the various aspects of dual-career policies and outcomes in academia, such as research productivity of dual-career couples, specific institutional policies and effective implementation, and outcomes in terms of impact on retention and gender diversity. Presentations focused on issues related to dual-career hiring for women in academic STEM fields (particularly at ADVANCE institutions) and the role of dual-career hiring in facilitating the recruitment of Hispanic and other women of color in STEM are encouraged. Travel costs for accepted presenters will be covered through the NSF ADVANCE grant. For full consideration, proposals should be submitted to ADVANCE@utpa.edu by December 1st, 2013. The proposals should include the type of presentation, title, an abstract of no more than 200 words, and the contact information of the presenters.
There is no registration fee. The event is sponsored by the NSF ADVANCE Program at UTPA in partnership with UTPA’s Women’s Faculty Network, the Faculty Senate, and the Council of Chairs. Dr. Marci McMahon (ADVANCE Administrative Fellow, Vice Provost Office for Faculty Affairs, UTPA) is the coordinator of the symposium.
