On Saturday October 26, 2013, Lord Fairfax Community College's Center for Civil War History will host a one day seminar and tour which will examine the complexities of "freedom" for African Americans in the lower Shenandoah Valley border region area of Frederick County, Virginia. The day will consist of a morning lecture--"The Great Act of the Age": Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation followed by an afternoon tour of sites which best illustrate the tenuous nature of freedom. Registration fee of $20 covers morning lecture, all handouts, and carpool tour. Sites visited include Milroy's camps, Pritchard Farm, Winchester Medical College, Orrick Cemetery, Hawthorn, Freedmen's Bureau Office site in Winchester, and Stephenson's Depot.
