LASA 2014 Call for Panelists
Market and Culture: Symbolic Practices, Performance, and Democracy
This panel will explore how performance transmits collective memories and social identities across generations of Latin@s as artists negotiate the symbolic and economic functions of cultural expression. The session will provide a forum to examine the complex and contradictory ways that cultural products reanimate, circulate, and transgress hegemonic practices enacted by various social actors—whether Latin@s, the dominant culture, or other ethno-racial or national groups—that may attempt to define and delimit the meanings of Latinidad vis a vis questions of space, sexuality, race, language, immigration status, sound, medium, or other symbolic and material factors.
Please submit a 250-word abstract by August 23 via email to Marisol.Negron@umb.edu. All abstracts should include the presenter’s name, affiliation, and email address where you may be reached.
