The Editorial board of Život umjetnosti invite all potential contributors to send in their proposals on the subject of ART PRACTICES IN POST-SOCIALISM
The fall of socialist regimes in Central and South-Eastern Europe, and their generally rather painful journey towards capitalism, democracy, and the new living and cultural standards of the EU, was a breaking point in the recent history of these countries. Even though the consequences of this sudden ideological turn can be found and analyzed on all levels of the society, art practices have documented, diagnosed, and – through their engaged involvement - defined the state of the nations of post-socialist Europe most directly and most honestly, as they had done so many times before in history.
Although the term “post-socialist” has been included in titles of so many exhibitions, publications, and scholarly studies, becoming a popular niche for humanist research at prestigious universities all over the world, the question of its true meaning today, almost 25 years after the establishment of the “new European order,” has remained open and largely under-researched, especially on the local levels. The Editorial board of Život umjetnosti therefore invites the potential contributors to dedicate themselves to documenting and reflecting on art practices in post-socialist space and time, in terms of topics such as the specificities of post-socialist art production in relation to their own cultural and artistic space and time, their cultural and artistic heritage, the contemporary production of the (former) West, the devastation of socialist cultural and social heritage, accompanied by the construction/invention of new traditions and styles, the issues of cultural memory and nostalgia in the new media, heteronomy, censorship, and so on.
