The Centre de Recherche d’Histoire Quantitative (CNRS-University of Caen) has initiated under its five-year research plan the bibliographic survey of all the personal accounts, diaries and memories, published in French on France and French people during World War II.
EGO 39-45 - War and occupation writings (1939-1945) has set out a free database in the internet to allow researchers and the interested public to make varied researches, according to the categories of author (‘resistance worker’, ‘collaborator’, etc.), the event (campaign in France, Vel d’Hiv roundup, etc.) or a given topic (everyday life, Liberation, etc.).
All records of accounts published during the years of occupation have been integrated. They account to slightly more than 300 entries. With the assistance of various institutions (mainly the Mémorial de Caen, the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah and Ministry of Defense), all the testimonies published between 1940 and 1949 (about 1250 documents) will be analyzed by the summer of 2014 by a team of regular writers.
In the following decades, the bibliographic information will be lighter (no summaries). They should be available for the publications 1950s to 1970s by the end of the five-year plan of the research centre in 2016.
Eventually, EGO 39-45 will promote the digitization of an unknown heritage. Everyone will thus have the opportunity to read in electronic form these depleted or rare testimonies.
