I'm looking for abstracts from those interested in taking part in a Creative Writing session at next year's NeMLA Convention (April 3-6) in Harrisburg, PA. The session will be titled 'Liberating Constraints'.
No prompt could be less productive than the injunction to ’just write something’. As writers, teachers and students, we rely on liberating constraints, limitations that serve to set free our creativity. Such constraints might govern length--write a 50-word story--or they might be grammatical or mathematical in nature. This session will be a showcase for tried and tested liberating constraints. Participants will outline a particular constraint they have successfully used, either in their own writing or in the classroom. They will then perform some of the work generated, the fruits of that constraint, whether poem, prose, non-fiction or hybrid form. Such work may be published or unpublished, the presenter’s own or that of other writers or student writers. The session will be an opportunity to share successful practices as well as to enjoy a range of creative outcomes.
