Colonial Resonance Conference

The musical concept of resonance, prevalent during the seventeenth century, suggested that a passive string could begin to vibrate without being struck if it shared a frequency with one that was being played, despite the distance between them. As the field of colonial Latin American studies turns away from the strict binaries of “conqueror” and “conquered” toward a more multivalent model of negotiation and contestation, space has opened up to explore questions of indirect interactions. This conference will serve as a soundboard for these resonances across various disciplines, each capturing a different aspect of the colonial experience.
We are looking for innovative papers that consider ways in which cultures interacted beyond moments of direct contact. Papers might address such disparate themes as:
- Colonial legacies
- Articulations of power
- Overlaps of text and image
- Visual and aural forms of expression
- Discourses of mestizaje
- Alternative perspectives on race and visibility
- The material New World
- Policing populations and counter-insurgency
- Law and courts as sites of contestation
We encourage submissions from across disciplines, including but not limited to: History of Art, Romance Languages and Literature, Archaeology, Anthropology, Comparative Literature, History, Religious Studies, and Sociology.
Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and must be accompanied by a CV.
Submissions are due by July 1, 2013, and should be submitted to the Symposium Committee by email at ColonialResonanceConference@gmail.com. Successful candidates will be contacted by email by July 15, 2013.
