I am writing to announce the publication of a new article, “Under the Microscope, The Examination of the Siege Scene Plate”, published on Research Online, the Freer|Sackler’s online venue for new, peer-reviewed research.
Co-authored by Renata Holod, College for Women Class of 1963 Professor in the Humanities in the History of Art Department, University of Pennsylvania and Blythe McCarthy, Andrew W. Mellon Senior Scientist at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the article presents a close reading of this iconic example of mina’i ware in the collection of the Freer Gallery of Art.
Careful examination of the newly cleaned surfaces and scientific examination of the glazes and colorants, together with the research carried out by Renata Holod for a companion article, “Event and Memory: The Freer Gallery’s Siege Scene Plate”, published in Ars Orientalis 42, have led to a clearer understanding of the plate and to mina’i more generally.
Don’t miss it! You can read it (for free) here: http://www.asia.si.edu/research/articles/minai-battle-plate.asp
