Call for papers for a session at the November 2013 Midwest Modern Language Association conference in Milwaukee, WI. This panel will explore Nineteenth and early Twentieth-century Decadence in all its forms (literary, artistic, philosophical, cultural) that took advantage of aesthetic expression and experimentation while going “against the grain” of normative social behavior. We are interested in papers that discuss varied interpretations and legacies of Decadence in order to examine art/artifice as the means to construct or redefine gender--from the cult of the Dandy, fashion, and cultural refinement to perversion, mysticism, and the occult. Papers may be in English or in French.
Please send 250 word proposals by May 31 to Scott Sheridan, email@example.com.
