Opre Khetanes! Concert and Symposium on Romani (Gypsy) Musics and Cultures represents a major gathering on the East Coast of scholars of Romani culture and Roma who work as academics, activists, and/or performers. Presentations will be made by established scholars and by graduate students with expertise in Romani studies.
In the symposium portion of Opre Khetanes!, (Self-)Representations: Romani Music and Culture in Diaspora, scholars in the fields of musicology, anthropology, Romani studies and related disciplines will present papers on subjects related to the representation of Romani people by themselves and/or others. Opre Khetanes! will also feature film screenings, performances, workshops, and a panel discussion. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Angela Kocze, research fellow at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and lecturer on European developmental policies at the University of ELTE, as our keynote speaker.
All symposium events will be held in Room 220 of the Silver Center at NYU (32 Waverly Places), and are free and open to the public. No pre-registration is required. Refreshments will be served!
Opre Khetanes is presented by the Initiative for Romani Music at New York University Department of Music, Center for Traditional Music and Dance, World Music Institute, and Voice of Roma
