We are accepting proposals for a paper to be included in the following session for the 2014 European Social Science History Conference (ESSHC): 'Mediating Ruptures and Silences in the Memory of the 1960s and 1970s in Europe'. In keeping with the 2014 theme of the ESSHC oral history network, 'Crises and Ruptures in Memory and Narrative', we are seeking a paper that will address issues of rupture, silence and the unspoken in oral accounts of the protest movements of the late 1960s and 1970s in Europe. The three other papers in the panel will explore the following topics:
· methodological challenges posed, for oral historians, by the interplay between former activists' individual memories and dominant cultural narratives of '1968' (Rebecca Clifford, University of Swansea);
· composure and discomposure relating to the issues of motherhood and abortion in the narratives of former women activists in Italy (Andrea Hajek, University of Warwick);
· a comparative analysis of narratives of the role of feminism in German militant movements in the 1970s (Katharina Karcher, University of Warwick).
We would welcome a fourth contribution that addresses disrupted memories and silences in the narratives of former activists from countries that were undergoing a dictatorship at the time (either the Eastern Bloc countries or the right-wing dictatorships of Portugal, Spain and Greece), but will consider proposals relating to all European countries, and any type of activism.
Proposals must be submitted by 30 April 2013. Please send abstracts of 200-300 words, along with a brief author biography, to Andrea Hajek (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Rebecca Clifford (email@example.com).
