Washington State University Vancouver will host “Recognition: A Conversation” March 5 – 7, 2013. The series will bring tribal representatives and scholars to campus to discuss what federal recognition means to their people. The series is free and open to the public.
Tue., Mar. 5 will feature Johnson Meninick, of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Indian Nation speaking about the history of Yakama recognition established by the Treaty of 1855.
The featured speaker for Wed., Mar. 6 is Mike Iyall of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, who will speak on his involvement in the long process leading to Cowlitz' federal recognition in 2000.
Thu., Mar. 7 features former Tribal Chairman Gary Johnson of the Chinook Indian Nation, who will speak about his tribe's ongoing quest for federal recognition.
Guest scholars Andrew W. Fisher (College of William & Mary) and Robert J. Miller (Lewis & Clark Law School) will provide additional commentary each evening.
The final evening of the symposium, Fri., Mar. 8, will feature a showing of _American Outrage_. The film follows the fight of two Western Shoshone women who challenged the U.S. government for land rights, eventually taking their case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
