On the 21st and 22nd of November 2013 the Faculdade de Letras of the University of Lisbon (Portugal) will host the international conference Theatre: Aesthetics and Power, organized by the Centro de Estudos de Teatro and the Centro de Estudos Clássicos of the FLUL.
The Call for Papers will be running until the 15th of May.
As an aesthetic, literary and philosophical expression, theatre has had a central role in the human spirit since ancient Greece. Theatre is not only a mirror of human passions and the satirical mirths they can provoke, but also an expression of the political phenomena where it is possible to feel the pulse of society. Theatrical performance is a complex reality, inviting to a wide range of analysis and perspectives. Theatre can be the individual voice of perplexity or resistance, of satire or turmoil. It can also be a collective political voice, as it grows from the polis and into the polis sheds its strength. This conference aims to promote a reflection on theatre and its multiple dimensions: performative, literary, philosophical, political and social, as well as its interaction with other arts.
The conference will be organized into plenary sessions (with invited speakers) and parallel sessions.
