Special Issue on “Eurocentrism in Historiography”
The Journal of Human and Society invites proposals for papers in a special issue on “Eurocentrism in Historiography.” In a continuously globalizing and homogenizing world, it is becoming more and more difficult to question the legitimacy of Eurocentric approach in history, yet the topic retains its utmost importance. One central problem revolves around how Eurocentrism persists in both past and contemporary academic publications.
We surmise that this long-debated perspective still survives; but how to approach it today is a matter worthy of discussion. Further questions include: Through which methods, in which historiographical traditions, and upon which scholarly premises do Eurocentric discourse and perspectives maintain themselves?
Is there a role of funding by private foundations and of political powers’ leverage on the production of this approach?
In this context, the adaptation of Western/European historical methodologies and their application to the pasts of non-European societies pose another significant set of questions, such as: To what extent could these methods be regarded as universal and to what extent locally specific to diverse Western cultures and societies?
Which theories might have a broader applicability and which others might not?
What were the influences of modernization theories, comparative historical analyses, and world system theories on non-European historiographies, primarily the Ottoman/Turkish one?
And how far civilization or culture-based approaches may help to overcome the problem of Eurocentrism?
We are pleased to receive articles related to these themes for the special issue on “Eurocentrism in Historiography” of Journal of Human and Society, which will be published in December 2013 by Society for Scientific Studies (İLEM). A non-exhaustive sampling of topics appropriate for this issue includes;
Past and Present of Eurocentric historiography,
Criticism of Eurocentric historiography from within and outside Europe,
Eurocentrism in Turkish / Ottoman historiography,
Western historical methods and non-Western historiographies,
Post-modern approaches to Eurocentric historiography.
