We seek at least one panelist, a chair and a commentator for a panel exploring "Embodied Nationalisms". One paper examines folk dance, primarily in Chicago between 1890 and 1940, as a practice in Progressive Era US that simultaneously fabricated and projected American-ness based on Old World, European traditions. A second paper investigates how movie and Broadway musicals in the Cold War continued the presentation of nationalism seen in concert dance and Broadway musicals before World War II. While both of these papers address twentieth century US, we welcome papers from diverse locations, time periods and embodied practices, such as military, sports and fitness/diet.
Please contact us as soon as possible, as the deadline for applying to OAH is 15 February.
