Call for Papers: Southeastern World History Association (SEWHA) Conference,
October 17-19, 2013, Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA
The Southeast World History Association invites proposals from scholars, teachers, and students in and beyond the
Southeastern United States for papers, posters/media displays, panels, roundtables, and workshops addressing this year’s theme of “Moving Peoples: Diasporas in World History.” This theme encompasses globally interconnected trends of conquest, colonization and displacement, intellectual ferment and geographies of knowledge, representations of race, gender, sexuality and world regions, and the role of cities as loci of transnational migration. The topic of diaspora is of particular importance to Norfolk State University as it connects to our mission as a historically black university, and to the Chesapeake region as a crossroads of world-historical transformations pertaining to indigeneity, race, and globalization.
Topics are not limited to, but might include:
Indigenous Peoples of the Americas and the Global South
Transglobal Radicals and World-Historical Change
Gender and Diaspora
LGBT migration
Spatial Representations of World Regions and Cultures
Migrants and Cities Throughout History
Ecology and Pre-Classical Human Migrations
1619 in Virginia and the World
A special roundtable will feature the War of 1812 in world-historical perspective.
In keeping with the mission and character of SEWHA, the Program Committee welcomes proposals that address scholarship in world history at all levels. The Committee strongly encourages proposals not only for panels (up to three presenters) and individual papers, but also for innovative formats such as roundtables (up to five participants), individual posters/media displays, workshops, and the like. The Committee also invites interested scholars, teachers, and students to coordinate proposals through the SEWHA list serve, and it particularly encourages proposals that combine teaching and scholarship.
