We are looking for additional historians to form a panel organized around the subject of reinterpreting the American Civil War for the American Historical Association meeting in Washington D.C., January 2 - 5, 2014.
With the release of the film "Lincoln" by Steven Spielberg, and the publication of James Oakes' Freedom National last December, the debate of what the Civil War represents to both the American public and professional historians has once again began to stir. While the focus of this panel is admittedly broad, we are interested in original research that either attempts to tackle this subject from a new perspective or critically responds to recent historiographical developments.
If you are interested, please contact Justin Rowe at rowejust@gmail.com--preferably with an abstract for a proposed paper and a CV. Apologies for the short time frame: the deadline for submitting proposals for panels is February 15.
