Conference on the Origins of the Alphabet
Polis Institute of Jerusalem, February 21 & 22.
The circumstances surrounding the origins of writing are subject to heated debates among scholars. Epigraphists still find it difficult to outline the context of this cultural revolution whereas specialists from relevant disciplines rarely engage in dialogue among themselves.
This is why we are inviting renowned professors in the field to a large debate on the issue. They will tackle this question from different points of view such as psychology, linguistics, history, paleography and sociology. The conference proceedings will be published during the first year following this meeting.
The lectures will be held in English or French.
Lecturers:
Aaron Demsky (Bar Illan University), Emile Puech (CNRS), Maria Tonietti (University of Florence), Pascal Vernus (EPHE), Marcel Sigrist (EBAF Jerusalem), Orly Golwasser (Hebrew University), Coltilde Pontecorvo (University of Rome), Christophe Rico (Polis Institute).
