CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline February 8, 2013
I am excited to announce the Fourth Annual UK Appalachian Research Community Symposium and Arts Showcase. We encourage undergraduate and graduate students attending a Kentucky university or college who are interested in topics relating to Appalachia to present at and attend the symposium in order to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on issues relating to Appalachia. This symposium offers students a supportive environment in which students from various fields can present their Appalachian-based research and creative work, learn from each others' findings, and discuss research and practice obstacles, successes and potential points of collaboration.
Our keynote speaker will be Victoria LeBeaux, a postdoctoral fellow in the University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture and Appalachian Center. LeBeaux is currently completing her PhD in Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University where she worked as a research and teaching assistant in the Center for Organic Agriculture. She has worked in Guatemala and is currently undertaking research in Appalachia to focus on agricultural entrepreneurship, agroecological crop production practices, and cooperation among communities and their partner organizations.
Requirements for Proposals:
* work must be topically related to Appalachia, original and produced in the last three years
* presentation formats include scholarly papers and organized panels, co-presentations, scholarly posters, roundtable conversations on Appalachian issues, films, mustic, plays, art and creative writing
* submit a 250 word abstract online by midnight, February 8, 2013. To submit an abstract, check the GARC tab on http://www.appalachiancenter.org and look for the abstract submission link.
Registration for presenters is online and must be completed by midnight February 15, 2013. You are encouraged to attend even if you are not presenting - also register online by February 15th.
