The Annamalai University is a unitary residential university instituted in the year 1929 by the great philanthropist Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, the first Founder Pro-Chancellor. Subsequently, the University reached new heights of excellence under the guidance second founder Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Rajah Sir M. A. Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad and the present Pro-Chancellor Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy. The University has nine faculties and forty-nine departments and over 3240 members as its teaching staff. The University hosted the spectacular 94th Indian Science Congress during January, 2007. Annamalainagar is a busy and a full-fledged University town, east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja. The University campus, including the colleges, hostels, and playgrounds, occupies an area of about a thousand acres.
The Department of Zoology, Annamalai University has made outstanding strides in both teaching and research activities in the past more than 75 years. The Department offers M.Sc. Zoology, M.Sc. Environmental Biotechnology,M.Sc., Microbiology and M.Sc. Integrated Zoology (5 years) M.Sc. Integrated Microbiology and M.Sc. Integrated Bioinformatics (5 years) programs in addition to M.Phil.and Ph.D. programs in all the subjects.
About the conference
The environment plays a vital role for the functioning of ecosystems and is ultimately related to human health. The increasing human population and industrial development have worsened the problem of disposal of anthropogenic chemicals and wastes in the environment. A majority of these contaminants contain potentially genotoxic and carcinogenic substances, since these genotoxins interact with genetic material of animals leading to a variety of ill effects.In view of the increasing awareness of formidable impacts of mankind and the environment, appropriate protective measures need to be adopted to mitigate the pollutants in order to achieve clean environment. In this context this conference will be aimed to cover the following topics,Environmental pollution, environmental ethics, solid waste disposal, toxicology, environmental technology, climate change, biodiversity, environmental awareness, legislation and regulation, mosquito control and food security and safety etc.
