The Virginia Tech Department of Music is pleased to host musical performances and scholarly presentations from across the globe on February 22-23, 2013 as part of the university’s First International Symposium on Latin American Music. Entitled “Transcending Borders: Latin American Music and its Projection onto the World Stage,” the event takes place in Squires Student Center on the Virginia Tech campus with educators and scholars who specialize in Latin American music along with composers and musicians. The symposium features prepared discourses on Latin American music as it relates to politics, culture and history, as well as concerts of Latin American music for mixed chamber ensembles and choir. The Ensemble Quito 6, a professional musical group from Ecuador under the direction of Jorge Oviedo, gives the symposium’s main performance. The keynote speaker at the event is noted author Dr. Geoffrey Baker.
