University/Centre for Regional and Local Historical Research
Postgraduate History Symposium
Keynote Speaker: Professor Paul Ward, University of Huddersfield
CALL FOR PAPERS
2012 was a memorable year for Great Britain, witnessing the Queen¡¦s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. These occasions resulted in an increased interest in the notions of national identity and patriotism. Although the permanency of these sentiments is questionable, the debates that they have generated will perhaps endure much longer than the legacy of the events themselves. This one day symposium seeks to bring together postgraduates and academics in order to continue these interesting and wide-ranging debates.
Topics could include but are not limited to:
„h National, regional and local identity
„h The idea of nationalism and internationalism
„h Monarchism and celebrations of royal events
„h Engagement with and commemoration of national festivals
„h Political use of nationalism
„h Citizenship and belonging
„h Notions and symbols of nationalism
„h Material and commercial use of nationalism
„h War and peace as vehicles for patriotism and identity
„h Identity and patriotism outside of the mainstream
„h Gendered representations of nationalism
„h Ceremony and tradition
„h Commemoration of the national past
„h Trans-national identities
Proposals of 300-500 words should be submitted no later than 22nd February 2013, with notification of acceptance being sent by 8th March 2013.
