The fall issue of Pennsylvania Legacies, published by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, is now available in print and online. The theme of this issue, out just in time for National Thrift Week later this month, is "The Value of Thrift." The articles, which examine how the notion of thrift has evolved throughout American history, are:
R. Daniel Wadhwani, "The Philadelphia Saving Fund Society and the Culture of Thrift in 19th-Century Pennsylvania"
Jennifer Scanlon, "Redefining Thrift: The Ladies' Home Journal and the Modern Woman"
Andrew L. Yarrow, "Sara Oberholtzer and the School Savings Bank Movement"
Brenda Barrett, "Conserving Pennsylvania's Natural Resources: The Thrifty Legacy of Maurice K. Goddard"
The issue also includes a look at the Historical Society's World War I and World War II posters promoting thrift in the service of a national cause, reviews of books and websites on related topics, a lesson plan on teaching about thrift and community development as well as tips for using the feature articles in the classroom, and a concluding Food for Thought essay by Jeremy Nowak titled "Reclaiming the Thrift Legacy," which looks at thrift from a more contemporary perspective.
