Seeking panelists for an OAH 2014 session proposal on detectives in the Antebellum through Progressive Era. As the literary trope of the detective was becoming consolidated during these decades, individuals working either privately or for the government were beginning to assume this role for themselves. My own paper will be on the self-representation and public reception of secret service head Hiram C. Whitley. I would welcome papers critically dealing with the development of the role of the detective, or the techniques of detection, in this period. If you are interested, please send me a formal or informal cv and a description of the paper you would like to include in the proposal.
