Engaging Hearts and Minds: Human Rights and Social Justice Issues Today Conference
May 6 & 7, 2013, Centennial College, Toronto
Proposals are invited from academics, researchers, graduate students, community and civic organizations, practitioners, community activists, policy makers and postsecondary institutions.
The goals of the conference are:
•to provide a place for academics, people in academic institutions as well as community organizations to be engaged with each other on global issues;
•to promote dialogue and exchange on global issues;
•to share ways of getting involved locally, nationally and internationally; and
•to promote awareness and activism that will benefit our local, national and global communities.
Topic Areas
Panels or roundtables must focus on one of these areas:
•Human rights issues – children, women, persons with disabilities and older persons
•Indigenous peoples, social and cultural rights
•Human rights commissions around the world
•Truth and reconciliation commissions around the world
•Internal displacements, internal migration, global migrants
•Civil and political rights, freedom of expression
•Human rights defenders, detentions, torture, executions
•Correlates of war
•Civilian perspectives on war
•Use of technology in war – robotics, drones
•Transitioning of veterans from combat to campus
•War and healing: reintegration and rehabilitation of people and communities
Proposal Submission Format and Deadlines
Format: Microsoft Word document, using a standard font, single-spaced, 3 pages maximum
Include: Title, Author(s), Presenter(s), Full Address, Phone/Fax Numbers, Email Addresses, Organizations/Affiliations, a brief biography (75 words max.), Presentation Summary (500 words max.), Type of presentation, Topic Area, and a brief presentation description (50 words), to include in the program should it be accepted.
Email submissions to the Institute for Global Citizenship and Equity at igce@centennialcollege.ca no later than Friday, February 15, 2013.
Presenters will be notified in mid-March 2013 if their proposal has been accepted for the conference, and will be required to confirm their attendance by April 12, 2013. Please keep this in mind as you submit your proposal.
