Shingainen (from the Japanese for “new concept”) is a new peer-reviewed journal that engages with the ever-progressing, yet-to-be-solidly-defined concept of “the Asia-Pacific”. We will feature pieces that attempt to either solve problems facing those who would aim for a peaceful Asia-Pacific order beneficial to all its residents, recognize the existence of such a problem, or define concepts needed to move forward with the foregoing. We are interested in politics, but in the broad sense, that is, social relations involving power. We will not strictly limit ourselves to political science methods, and strive for an open, interdisciplinary approach.
Articles are accepted in English or Japanese, and will be presented with an accompanying abstract in the other language (translated by our translation team). Shingainen is thus the ideal forum for those wishing to reach Japan/the outside world (as the case may be) without (at least at first) leaving the native-language comfort zone. As resources allow, we plan to extend this treatment further to abstracts in Chinese (in the print version), and, on our website, in all the major languages of the region.
The journal accepts four types of submissions. Word counts are inclusive of endnotes but not reference lists:
Research manuscripts of up to 6,000 words;
Research notes – manuscripts of up to 3,000 words seeking specifically to advance a new idea, perspective, or approach;
Book reviews of up to 1,000 words;
Review essays that critique a line of argument rather than any one piece in particular. They are not to exceed 4,000 words.
All submissions must be accompanied by a brief biographical sketch of up to 50 words and, except for book reviews, an abstract of up to 200 words.
Manuscripts will be accepted on a rolling basis until March 1, 2013.
Questions/Comments? Always welcome.
