“Jews in Image and Imagination: Body, Gender, and Sexuality in Representation”
Jewish Studies Graduate Student Association Conference, Indiana University Bloomington
Thursday, February 7 -Friday, February 8, 2013
Keynote Speaker: Charlotte E. Fonrobert, Stanford University
Proposal submission deadline: Monday, November 26, 2012
The inaugural conference of the Jewish Studies Graduate Student Association at Indiana University Bloomington, sponsored by the Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program, “Jews in Image and Imagination: Body, Gender, and Sexuality in Representation” will explore the representational relationship between Jews and sexuality, Jews and gender, Jews and physicality, and Jews and the body. How have Jews imagined themselves throughout history and how do they imagine themselves today? Or, how do others imagine Jews or even “the Jew”? Appropriate proposals might explore such topics as the new Israeli masculinity in Hebrew literature, the figuring of queer Jews in film, Jews on stage, representations of Jews in the medical profession, medicine’s treatment of Jews, or Jews in athletics. The conference is designed to encompass a range of academic subjects, while producing a sustained and focused debate about how Jews have appeared in literary and artistic works.
Dr. Charlotte E. Fonrobert, Professor of Religion at Stanford University, will deliver the keynote address on Thursday. Her research on sexuality in Talmudic literature will serve at the centerpiece of graduate panel discussions. These discussions will comprise four themed panels of graduate students grouped according to research interests. Authors will deliver a 20-minute paper, allowing for response and questions.
We invite graduate students to submit proposals for their papers, which should include the following information attached:
1. A paper title
2. An abstract of a minimum of 250, and no more than 350, words
3. Contact information, including name, mailing address, email address, telephone number, and graduate institution.
Please send proposals as an e-mail attachment to Joseph Bradley Hayden, conference chair, at firstname.lastname@example.org with “Jewish Studies Graduate Student Conference Proposal” as its subject. Proposals are due by Monday, November 26, 2012. Final decision will be made no later than Dec 15.
Scholars will provide their own travel and lodging expenses.
