The West has always both revered and reviled the Image. The advent of Christianity complicated and energized both its use and concept, as did the Enlightenment and modernity. On the basis of readings in philosophy, theology, literature, and aesthetics, our seminar will trace this vital thread running through our religious, aesthetic, and philosophical quests for self-knowledge.
