This post-doctoral seminar will examine first encounters between Westerners (including overseas settlers) and non-Westerners, 1750-1940. Topics in 2013 will include critiques of modernization schemas; arguments about the transition from Enlightenment to high imperialism; the transnational movement of workers, missionaries, and intellectuals; and cultural encounters in the arts.
