1) Narrative Sources on Late Ottoman Istanbul
Within the framework of the international research project Istanbul Memories. Personal Narratives of the Late Ottoman Period the Orient-Institut Istanbul is pleased to invite applications for Ph.D. research fellowships. Istanbul Memories (www.istanbulmemories.org) is an interdisciplinary and international research project of the Orient-Institut Istanbul and its academic cooperation partners. This project aims at collecting, recovering and rereading the personal narratives, autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, letters, and other kinds of ego documents in the various languages of Istanbul’s residents as sources for the study of late Ottoman social realities in all their inclusiveness and complexities. The project hopes to uncover new and understudied primary sources related to the geographical focus on the late Ottoman capital. Successful applicants are expected to demonstrate an awareness of both the empirical as well as the theoretical complexities of using self-narratives as historical sources.

2) Linguistic Turkology
Research projects in the field of Linguistic Turkology fall within the classical domain of research supported by the Orient-Institut Istanbul.

3) Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences on Islamic, Mediterranean and Turkish culture, society and history
This stipend reflects the wide scope of the academic disciplines and research questions supported by the work of the Orient-Institut Istanbul as a Turkological and area studies research institute.

The award consists of a monthly stipend of € 1,000 for the duration of up to six months, and a one-time renewal is possible. Travel expenses to and from Turkey will be reimbursed.

Prospective applicants are expected to hold an M.A. degree in a related academic discipline. A complete application must specify the necessity of conducting research in Istanbul or elsewhere in Turkey and include a detailed time frame for the envisioned research.

A basic command of German or Turkish is expected of all applicants. As the Orient-Institut Istanbul aims at creating an open and supportive academic environment, stipend holders are expected to attend colloquia and conferences organized by the institute and to give a public presentation of their research. Research stays outside of Istanbul must be coordinated with the director.
