The Institute of Caribbean Studies of the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (UPR-RP) presents the lecture “Exploraciones botánicas en el Caribe” [Botanical Explorations in the Caribbean] by Dr. Eugenio Santiago Valentín (Dept of Biology, School of Natural Scienes, UPR-RP).The activity will be held on Thursday, October 18, from 1:00 to 3:30pm at the CRA 108), School of the Social Sciences, UPR-RP.Description: The Caribbean island is the stage for great biological diversity. Here one may highlight a spectacular flora of over ten thousand species, making it an important region for conservation. Arguably, documentation on Caribbean flora begins in 1492, despite the clear geopolitical and mercantile motivations of the Columbus enterprise. While commercial and practical interests prevailed in studies on natural history, the Caribbean continued being one the first arenas where the discipline of botanical taxonomy in the New World matured. The intensity of exploration of the various islands and colonies was varied in different historical moments. The talk will focus on key people whose activities and contributions have been significant in the Caribbean.
