ORAL HISTORY and PHOTOGRAPHY
Al Thomson has worked as an oral historian in Australia and Britain for 30 years in both academic and community projects. He is currently Professor of History at Monash University and Director of the Monash Institute for Public History. Alistair’s research and teaching explores the ways in which different kinds of life story evidence can illuminate the past and its meanings in the present lives of individuals and society. He has recently published Oral History and Photography (Palgrave, 2011) with Alexander Freund. This participatory master class will be in two linked parts – Part 1 explores approaches and issues in using photographs in oral history interviews. In Part 2 discussions will focus on approaches and issues in interpreting photographs and memories as historical evidence.
