The Central Pennsylvania Consortium (CPC), comprised of Dickinson, Franklin and Marshall, and Gettysburg Colleges, sponsors an annual conference on women's studies. The theme of the 2012-13 conference, held at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, is "Young Feminisms: Youth, Gender and Transformation."
Keynote speaker is Jennifer Pozner, the author of Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV, the founder and Executive Director of Women In Media & News, a national media analysis, education and advocacy group; and frequent commentator on CNN, NPR and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Girls on HBO, "slut walks" on college campuses, and the "It Gets Better Campaign" for LGBTIQ youth. Today the media, politicians and scholars focus extensively on young people, gender and sexuality. This conference hopes to capture this widespread interest in youth through feminist frameworks. How are young people today interpreting and enacting feminisms? How are boys and girls and young men and women represented across the media? How does gender shape the problems (and solutions to the problems) among boys and girls, such as bullying, self-esteem, teen parenthood and eating disorders?
We solicit papers on topics relevant to this theme and we especially welcome papers that discuss people and topics outside of the United States. Faculty, graduate students and undergraduate papers are welcome.
