The History Graduate Student Association at Tulane University proudly announces its second annual Graduate Student Conference on The Global Gulf, to take place February 21-23, 2013. The conference will include a keynote lecture by Walter Johnson. Walter Johnson is the Winthrop Professor of History and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University and author of the award winning Soul by Soul: Life Inside the Antebellum Slave Market. In addition to the reception after the keynote, the conference will feature many informal opportunities for graduate students to socialize and network outside of the conference while seeing historic districts of New Orleans.

Given its past and present as a site of transnational contact, conflict, and exchange, New Orleans is the ideal location for scholarly explorations of the Global Gulf. As a conceptual model, the Global Gulf invites scholarly inquiry that blurs traditional geographic, temporal, or disciplinary boundaries. This interdisciplinary conference encourages papers examining the very real historical and contemporary networks linking the people and places of the Gulf Coast, Circum-Caribbean, American south and wider Atlantic World, however it welcomes scholarship rooted in any and all geographic locales and time periods. Potential paper and panel topics could revolve around questions directly connected to the Atlantic World such as creolization and cultural hybridity, commercial, ecological or biological exchanges, or the social and cultural experiences of diasporic actors. However, the conference also encourages topics that deal with broader issues such as empire, colonialism, identity, class, race, and gender in a historical context.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION:

We invite individual paper and full (three person) panel proposals. Submissions should include a working paper title, an abstract limited to 300 words, and a current one-page CV. Panel proposals should include a one page summary for the panel. The deadline for proposals is November 18, 2012. Presenters will be notified by January 1 of acceptance. Final papers must be submitted to commentators by February 1, 2013.
