Bollywood is here. The online workshop/ course course is designed for both new as well as the seasoned consumer and appreciator of Bollywood movies. It will discuss Bollywood movies with special reference to depiction and portrayal of romance and relationships and the identity of women within it.
The course will include an appreciation of Bollywood movies and the portrayal of romance and romantic relationships in the sociological backdrop of India.A term to refer to the Hindi film production industry that is largely based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
The transition in Bollywood movies over the past century has been interesting and with the emergence of a global film based economy, it has a wider outreach and influence. The focus of the course will be romantic relationships and the construction of identities of women and gender encompassing different production and social values that can accommodate disparate sensibilities within India and outside India. Each class will be informed by two to three movies that illustrate the key aspects of the content. Additionally there will be readings to supplement the lecture as an option.
The course will be a hybrid with an online modality along with in person lectures. Lectures will be audio and video format and accessible to those enrolled.
Classes include an introduction to The history, transitions, and comparisons over decades from 1920-2010 in Bollywood film production; and several romantic genres including 'Boy meets Girl' prototype and "Arranged Marriage" portrayed in Bollywood.
