Montréal, September 20, 2012. It is with great pleasure that the journal Intermédialités / Intermediality announces the publication of its nineteenth issue, « Synchroniser / Synchronizing », under the direction of Philippe Despoix (Université de Montréal) and Nicolas Donin (IRCAM, Paris).
This issue explores the specific modalities which inform the act of synchronization. By focusing on intersections between the visual arts and sound practices/music and zeroing in on the mediatic nods—such as bodies, writings and technical objects—where these modalities are made particularly visible, the issue proposes to trace an archeology of modes of (de)synchronization. It brings together the work of Rémy Campos (CNSMD Paris, Haute École de Musique de Genève), Maya Gratier and Julien Magnier (Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense), Serge Cardinal (Université de Montréal), Daniel Deshays (École Nationale des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre, Lyon), Sébastien Denis (Université de Provence – Aix-Marseille 1), Vincent Bouchard (University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and Peter Szendy (Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense). The issue presents the artist feature Encyclopædia of Manual Operations / Enzyklopädie der Handhabungen, by Berlin-based artist Anette Rose with an introduction by Ines Lindner (Berlin). This presentation is followed by a previously unpublished dialogue between Glenn Gould and John Thompson, taken from the unreleased video document Radio as Music.
This issue is edited in collaboration with Circuit www.revuecircuit.ca.
