Students struggling under our current economic crash can study its most striking historical precedent: the Great Depression. While Franklin Roosevelt led Americans' fight to survive, job loss, foreclosure, and drought threatened lives just as they do today. While Steinbeck explored the lives of those who moved, the website Rain: A Dust Bowl Story offers a slice-of-life picture of the lives of those who chose to stay--particularly women and farmers. In both American and Texas history these Great Plains people left a legacy of endurance that is instructive today. The author welcomes and responds to reader comments. Note: Ken Burns also will be airing a special on the Dust Bowl on PBS on November 18 and 19.
