The Fifth Charles Town International Maroon Conference, “Maroon Lands, Laws, and Cultures,” invites papers that explore the relationships between place and tradition in Maroon communities throughout the Atlantic world. This interdisciplinary conference aims to explore Maroon issues, histories, and practices to consider the ways they have endured, transformed, and resonated in the Caribbean, Canada, South America, Europe, the United States and Africa. We welcome papers and performances from (but not limited to) history, literature, ethnography, anthropology, geography, art, education, sociology, linguistics, African studies, cultural studies, theatre, and film. This event offers a combination of scholarly panels and cultural events, bringing together descendants of Maroons with scholars interested in Maroon heritage and indigenous cultures, and it takes place in the Maroon community of Charles Town in Portland, Jamaica, June 20-23, 2013.
