For our proposed panel at the ASN World Convention titled “Sharp Shards of the Empires. East Central Europe 1917 – 1923”, we welcome proposals which examine the relationship of factual control of territories, concepts of ‘natural’ and ‘legitimate’ borders as well as adoptions and refutations of the concept of the ‘right of self-determination of nations’ in public opinion and international diplomacy in the process of the establishment of a post-World-War I order in East-Central Europe. Papers which emphasize the transition from imperial periphery to national state and/or which focus on former Habsburg crown lands are particularly welcome.
