New Europe: Democratic Cultures, Identities and Citizenship

CALL FOR PAPERS:
Multiple cultural affiliations are a reality in European societies today. The workshop aims to explore interactions between European cultural identities, ethnocentric, multicultural and civic elements of citizenship and democratic transitions (post 1989). The perennial question amongst people in eastern, central and western Europe is how can different cultures co-exist, integrate and aspire to live as one community. The workshop invites scholars to reflect on challenges and opportunities of a multicultural 'New Europe'. Where will democracy be consolidated, or will social and political reform result in the threatening radicalisation of politics? What ethnic, national and/or religious conflicts might surface further to destabilise parts of the European continent? How far have post-communist states moved along the democratic continuum? What are the responses/initiatives from the EU in encouraging rights dialogues as well as inclusive or exclusive concepts of citizenship? What role has civil societies played in the politics of 'New Europe'? How has religious difference constructed a problem to which European pluralism becomes the solution? How do EU citizenship practices facilitate pluri-lingual democratic values, accommodate minority rights and engage with intercultural identities in Europe today?
Papers are invited on the above mentioned topics.Comparative perspectives are welcome.
Timeline: Please submit an abstract of 300 words, paper title, name and institutional affiliation by 10th January 2013. Scholars invited to attend the workshop will be notified by January 20th 2013. First draft submission by 28th February 2013. Workshop dates: 18th and 19th March 2013 at Jindal School of International Affairs, O.P. Jindal Global University, India. Selected papers will be published as an edited book with a leading academic publisher in 2014. Final draft submission for papers towards publication 31st May 2013.
