The 23rd meeting of the Australasian Association for European History (AAEH) marks a return to Wellington, the vibrant political, cultural and arts capital of New Zealand. Our theme encapsulates the instability and uncertainties of present-day Europe – so distant from the triumphs of 1989’s fall of the Berlin Wall and 2002’s introduction of the Euro. In the context of intense pressures on Europe’s cohesion, the conference encourages reconsideration of Europe’s myriad historical faultlines – national, regional, religious, economic, ethnic, social, cultural, generational, and others. The Organizing Committee invites proposals for papers that address the history of modern Europe in light of the conference theme.
Possible topics might include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Faultlines in society, culture, economics and politics
- Ethnic, racial, religious and ideological divisions and tensions
- The causes and consequences of rebellion, uprisings, revolts and wars
- Generational ruptures
- The implications of transnational perspectives
- Cultural constructions and representations of historical divisions and cohesions in Europe
- Emotions and memories surrounding Europe’s faultlines
- Shifts in the European worldview
As part of the conference’s focus on the theme of Europe’s faultlines, the Organizing Committee also solicits paper proposals for a series of research-intensive workshops to be held on the afternoon of Tuesday 2 July on the following workshop themes:
1/. Displacement and refugee crises: violent wars and peacetimes
2/. Crises of sovereignty
3/. Social outrage
4/. Sites of amnesia in history and memory
