This panel covers the literary image/narrative of African civilization(s). The African past is broadly defined. This CFP encourages submissions of papers that involve racial notions presented by African American (or other) writers that present European civilizational parity/relativism or contrasts with African civilization.
The panel will engage discussion about positive and/or negative representations of African heritage/legacy. Papers that entail both positive and negative representations of the African past by various writers are welcome. The papers can also include images of othering and/or narratives of the demise and destruction of civilization as seen by hierarchical readings of the past. The papers can involve writings/images presented in literature, history, and/or anthropology.
Please submit abstracts to jserran2@utk.edu by September 30th.
