60th Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS)
Proposal Submission Deadline: December 1, 2012
Conference Theme: “Latin America at a Global Crossroads”
The 60th Annual Meeting of SECOLAS will take place at the Hotel Continental in Panama City, Panama, from Wednesday, March 6 to Sunday, March 10, 2013. SECOLAS invites faculty members, independent scholars and graduate students to participate in the conference through panel proposals and individual paper proposals.* Featured speakers will address the conference theme. While papers and panels that incorporate this theme (broadly conceived) are encouraged, they are not required.
In 1513, Vasco Nuñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and reached the Pacific Ocean. Since that time Panama (and by extension all of Latin America) has become one of the great global crossroads in human history. In 1914, nearly a century ago, the Panama Canal opened, an engineering achievement which further cemented the role of the isthmus and its regional neighbors as a magnet for people, cultures, commerce, and ideas from all over the world. With the opportunity to celebrate six decades of scholarly exchange on Latin America in this most appropriate of locations, as well as to commemorate these historic events, SECOLAS encourages the participation of all interested scholars and students in its annual conference.
Send proposals, including a 250‐word abstract for each panel and/or paper and a brief CV (no more than
