I am interested in assembling a panel that examines media depictions of southerners and southern life. The ideal panelist will focus on representations of the 20th century south, but I am open to those that examine illustrations of earlier periods . My paper is about the use of southern images as patriotic signifiers during the 1950s and 1960s. I will discuss how the CBS television network used southern-themed programming to combat the pseudo-radical image it developed in the wake of the early 1950s Red Scare. If you think your paper would be a good fit, please contact me no later than August 24, 2012.
